Introduction

or "the sickness of business oriented software"
Software Development is a business. And business is about money.

Thats what it is all about, right?

Well, i spent some years in different software development areas now (corporate, academia, private and open source) and found that there is more crap being produced the more money is involved.

That is not necessary true for different sizes of corporate development but it is true across the fields i mentioned.

Money makes peoples life easier but:

  • often downgrades the overall quality (because it just needs to fit crappy businessmen needs, other quality aspects get secondary)
  • downgrades the power of each individual project member
In the end, the company gets some money, the customer may be happy in the end. Modern project methodologies like the agile row (XP, Scrum for example) close the gap between technical and business experts.
Nethertheless, the project is what i like to call "sick": they just spent:
  • brainpower
  • time
  • human creativity
And got
  • a worthless piece of data
  • fooled the customer
Thats ok if it would be a niche thing. But i feel its common.
People sit down day after day and produce (thankfully) closed-source crap.

On the other hand they could have changed the world if they would have sit down before and took it to the next curve. (>>Guy Kawasaki)
They all just take whats already there and lift to a 1% more functionality thing while waisting resources!

Do we all have to be entrepreneur?

No, thats the same we don't want 4000 soccer teams to play in the first league.
But its about the direction.
Its about to STOP producing more crappiness. Its about make money by doing things really well, really better and don't fool the customers!

Conclusion: Develop you care about

NutritiousSoftware wants to reduce this crappiness by
  • blogging about the good and the bad
  • writing about organizations, communities as well as companies that believe in the need for a heathy software development envinronment
  • featuring software:
    • crappy stuff so that people do not have to reinvent that
    • stuff that touches untouched places/methods
